1. Wash away dead skin cells with a gentle exfoliator each morning.

Leaving dead skin on your face can cause problems. Your natural oils can become trapped by dead skin, causing infection. Using too harsh of an exfoliator can spread it to other areas. Using a gentle exfoliator head to toe daily will make your skin glow and your hair grow faster.

2. Mist your skin to help dilute acne fighting serums.

Acne is an inflammatory condition, and almost every product we use to treat it further inflames the skin on some level. It is important to start out slowly by diluting your treatment and working up to a full-strength solution. Misting your skin before you apply treatment is a helpful tool in reducing inflammation.

3. Use mineral cosmetics to help your skin fight free radicals during the day.

Mineral makeup contains physical sunblockers that help to protect your skin. Be sure to layer your sunscreens for maximum protection against damaging UV rays.

4. Always treat acne in the evening and NEVER before being exposed to sunlight.

Using topical spot treatment during the day can cause the sun to bake the medication into your skin, causing damage to some skin types. Sleep affords your body time to heal itself, making this the best time to help combat blemishes. Start slowly when using any acne fighter or your face may grow inflamed and breakouts could worsen. Start by using the acne fighter three times a week, and in time you may be able to use it every night.

5. Change your pillowcase daily to decrease the bacteria on your face at night.

You can also flip the pillow and change the pillowcase every other night. Use white pillowcases and wash them with a cup of bleach, very hot water, and rinse twice.

6. Use detergents without fragrance for your laundry.

Fragrance inflames acne. ALL Free and Clear is my favorite fragrance-free detergent. Seventh Generation is another good choice. Also, use only fragrance-free dryer sheets.

7. Everyone has told you not to pick at your face. Let me remind you of why…

a. You will spread bacteria under the skin, creating more acne.
b. Pressing your nails into your skin breaks down collagen and destroys elastin (which enables your skin to hold together). The little holes, dents, and enlarged pores that you create are permanent. Even with today's technology, little can be done to decrease pore size and acne scarring. Trust me, I have tried to reduce my acne scars for many years. The most common regret I hear from my older clients is the acne scars that they created when they were young.

8. If you must pick at your skin, WEAR GLOVES.

Gloves are your best defense against spreading bacteria. Common latex gloves can be found in any drugstore. While wearing gloves, use a fine-point lancet to pierce the skin. Squeeze the blemish very lightly. Clean with an alcohol pad, put 2% salicylic acid on it, and go to bed. This is the safest way to protect your skin if you must touch your face.

9. Find someone you trust to watch over your skin and get a skin peel once a month to help prevent breakouts.
